  • The great LJ comment freakout (and why it’s not completely unexpected)

So LJ has gone and done this fuckery with comments and it’s hideous, we all hate it, it fucks up our fandom stuff and our kink memes and sf_drama hates that their trigger warnings are gone (you now have to omg put them inside the comment as though… you can’t stop reading after the first line? idek man, idk, sf_drama manages to make everything look ridiculous) and all the sales communities are kinda fucked and so are the charity communities. Basically, everything’s shitty and nothing feels good. It also looks like web 2003, but would also potentially crash my netbook due to how much script is in it.

It is the worst of everything, and we’re all very shocked that even after pages of whining and bitching on news and so on, they’re not changing it.

    Why, you ask?

Because in the grand scheme of Livejournal, they don’t give a fuck. Why? Because they don’t have to. Why? Because English-speaking LJ users are a very small part of their client-base. How many spam-bots try to friend you who are English-speaking? Which branch of the site has much, much more functionality? Where do they test new features? In motherfucking Russia, that’s there. LJ is huge in Russia. It’s a little fringe thing that’s nearly gone the way of Myspace in English-speaking internet-space. Sure, fandom is based there a in a big way, but fandom is what percentage of internet users compared to the entirety of the Russian blogging population?

So they really don’t have to listen to us*. Russia eclipses us in terms of userbase, financial input, and a large part of their management.

Welcome to the globe, English-speakers. We’re being marginalized, and in a tiny, insignificant manner. This isn’t even the kind of marginalization that you can really get your panties in a bunch about because it’s one website on the whole internet.

It is shitty? Yes. But don’t ask like they’re obligated to listen to your screaming and hollering any more than you listen to the screaming and hollering of people you consider to be less than nothing. Like the people you’re so fond of calling wastes of space in internet arguments.

*I still hope they change it, though. Because this layout is balls to look at.
